The Human Resources and Recruitment Manager (based in Calgary, cannot be performed remotely) is a strategic role that is a trusted business partner. You’ll be primarily supporting 3 lines of business: Business Consulting for Veterinary Practices, supporting our Owner-Operator Franchises and our commercial construction team.

You’ll have the opportunity to support clients (internal and external) with full cycle recruitment, employee engagement, employee relations (this will be a significant portion of the work with consulting clients), people and culture programs and more! You’ll be able to use your creative ideas to support clients and implement custom solutions. As the business is a start up, you will need tos support the company with items like business development ideas to help grow the business and the company will hire a Business Development Specialist in the future.

We are high performers at VetShield and have big plans for the future. You must be comfortable working past 5pm when it gets busy, working the odd saturday or sunday for events, completing quality work at a fast pace and up to 20% travel (you’ll get to work from home the other 80% of the time roughly).

What does the role look like?

Recruitment 

  • Sourcing and hiring for positions ranging from HealthCare (ex. Veterinarians) to skilled trades and Business type positions
  • Partnering with clients and internal hiring managers to support full cycle recruitment
  • Drafting job postings, advertising positions through various platforms, screening resumes, short listing candidates through interviews, presenting offers of employment and negotiating employment offers.
  • Developing recruitment strategies to create a talent pipeline, creating strategic partnerships with post secondary institutions, building relationships within the communities we serve and finding innovative ways to attract talent.
  • Working in collaboration with marketing to create targeted campaigns for senior or difficult to fill positions. Ie website and social media strategic positioning of the employer to be optimally attractive for job seekers.

Employee relations

  • Advising clients on employment legislation, performance management or disciplinary action
  • A number of times, you may need to lead the coaching conversations with employees for Veterinary Practice Owners or Managers

Employee Engagement

  • Conducting employee engagement surveys with clients to obtain feedback to identify opportunities that VetShield can support with
  • Taking the time to get to know our clients employees and joining conversations with our clients to understand how to increase engagement with our clients employees

Training and development

  • Leading training workshops to teach Veterinary Practice Owners and Managers about Human Resources and providing 1:1 training with managers in the practice
  • Working with clients to develop effective onboarding for new hires, training plans to support growth and the acquisition of new or advanced skills
  • Finding training courses or designing training methods for clients (online training, mentorship programs, job shadowing, train the trainer, etc.)

Retention

  • Completing exit surveys to identify causes for turnover and creating an action plan to minimize turnover
  • Developing strategies to retain employees through people and culture programs

Total rewards

  • Creating the infrastructure for competitive compensation (job bands for positions and ensuring they are market competitive) 
  • Creating and reviewing incentive plans that drive performance

Business Development and Account Management

  • Coming up with ideas that will support VetShield with gaining new clients and leading the initiative(s)
  • Attending networking events to meet people who may be potential clients or candidates for recruitment
  • Joining and leading calls with potential customers to promote our services and explaining the value that we can offer them with our consulting services
  • Manage accounts for business consulting clients
  • Completing a needs analysis at the start to determine what they need, drafting proposals, following up and managing the account once they become a client (having weekly meetings with them to provide updates and going through recommendations)

Other 

  • VetShield has a sister company called Auxillio, which is the brokerage part of the business that supports clients with buying/selling Veterinary Clinics, you’ll need to work with the team to compose business profiles and business plans

What are we looking for?

  • A bachelor's degree in Human Resources 
  • A CPHR designation would be an asset, but not required
  • 5 years of experience in Human Resources AND Recruitment
  • At least 1 year of leadership experience 
  • Previous experience working in consulting or working in the HealthCare industry would be a bonus
